What Causes Brittle Splitting Nails?

I ve begun to notice that my fingernails are coming off. I ve never been able to grow them out, because they re pretty thin, etc.but this is much more severe than them just breaking off. They seem to be splintering, and that s how i noticed something wasn t right a couple weeks ago. The tiny splinters cause quite a bit of pain when touched or snagged on piece of clothing, etc. Now the nails on both thumbs, pointer fingers, and one pinky have receded nearly halfway down the nail bed. On a few fingers, there is a part of the nail that is remarkably thinner than the rest of the nail. If running your finger across the nail, you can actually feel the hump where the regular nail ends and the thin part begins. If you were standing in front of me looking at my nail bed, the thinner/pink-colored part of nail comes down in a triangle shape, to a perfect point. If i touch that part of nail, i can feel it underneath the nail itself and it s a little painful. I ve always used peroxide for a hang nail, one that has been cut to the quick, ingrown toenails, etc., but when i used peroxide on a couple that d gotten cut to the quick, i noticed the nails were lifting from nailbed. The peroxide made its way underneath the nail and I screamed out in pain. I could actually see the peroxide bubbling underneath the nail. After a couple minutes it was still bubbling and pain was still unbearable, and after my right thumb nail splintered and began to Peel Back past halfway down nail bed, I knew something was very badly wrong... No idea what, though. I recently lost my Job, have no insurance, and certainly no means to pay for a doctor visit. I DESPERATELY NEED ANY ADVICE, ASSISTANCE, OR EVEN A GUESS as to what may be going on with my nails. Thank You for Your Time & God Bless
