What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge After Discontinuing Depo-Provera Shot?

Hello. I m currently coming off the depo birth control shot. I was due for a shot in March I did not take it. Had planned on getting off of it because of the symptoms I had been on it for three years. Ever since Saturday I ve been having brown discharge, not a lot but enough to make me worry, and my stomach has been feeling strange. Crampy and upset. I ve took two pregnancy test. Both come back negative. Any advice?

Hi,

Deposit primera is a long acting progesterone derivative contraceptive. Irregular bleedings / absence of periods is characteristic effect of the medicine. Even after discontinuation, it takes about 6-8 months for periods to get normal and till then conception is not possible. The brown discharge you have is because your body is yet not free from the effect of the contraceptive. Please patiently wait for the periods to resume their normal pattern. In case it takes more than one year, consult your gynecologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
