What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting?

I had my period on 3rd february. On 1st March, i had unprotected sex. So i took i-pill within 72 hrs of sex. I got bleeding from my vagina on 6th March ( I donot know if it was period or not and usually my period never gets delayed, it always occurs prior to the date) which continued for 5 days. I also tested pregnancy using prega news on 8th march and it showed negative. On 1st April, i got some brown spotting which just lasted for 2 days. I did not get period after that. I tested for pregnancy again which came negative. Again on 11th April, i got some brown spotting from vagina and just a drop of dark liquid. My question is why did not i get normal period in month of April ? Am i going to be pregnant ? Or it is happening because of medicine s side effect ? What is it exactly ? Is there any chances of me being pregnant or am safe ?

Hi,

I-pill is an emergency contraceptive and contains a high dose of hormones. Mostly it leads to withdrawal (of hormones from the body) within 8 days of intake. Normal period gets delayed by 8 days (it was scanty because of the recent bleeding you had.)

I-pill also causes temporary irregularity in bleeding for 2-3 months. Your irregular spotting can be attributed to that.

Now about possibility of pregnancy. Any unprotected sex following the withdrawal bleeding is liable to cause pregnancy as the dose of hormones can cause rebound ovulation. Now if you had unprotected sex in the following month the possibility of pregnancy needs to be excluded.

Pregnancy can be detected by a home pregnancy test after a week of expected menstruation.

Now in the statistics of confused menstruation. You can go for a blood pregnancy test (hCG test) after 3 weeks of such unprotected sex. Get an internal examination by an expert gynecologist to know the possibility.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
