General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Brownish vaginal discharge after birth control pills or shots is usually normal and it is not of concern. Increased hormone levels due to birth control methods will result in thinning the inner lining of uterus. As the body breaks that lining, some of these linings can be discharged by body thru vagina. Also many times these uterine lining entrap the blood vessels & these can be mixed with blood or vaginal fluid hence causing brown vaginal discharge.

Normally this brown discharge, should stop by itself, once the hormone levels are stabilized, usually within 2-3 months. However, if it does not stop by this time or it becomes more darker, you are advised to see your doctor and you may be investigated for another cause like STD etc. To minimize the chances of this discharge, you are advised to take your pills or shots regularly as advised and without missing any dose to minimize chances of break through bleeding. Also, you are advised to stay hydrated. By staying hydrated, the body can expel more efficiently any unwanted lining and further build up of these lining.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
