What Causes Burning Mouth And Gums In A BP Patient?

I am female, 57 yrs old, active, on meds for hypertension, no problem with cholesterol, but menopausal. Have recently had a minor hypothalamic ischemic stroke that had let me with numbness & tingling on the left side of my body, esp. the fingers & toes. Am on low dose asprin, plavix, lipitor and altace. 2 questions: My mouth & gums feel like they are burning. Could this be caused by either of these drugs? Also in your experience, does the numbness dissipate with time?

Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Lipitor (Atorvastatin) can cause paresthesia as CNS side effects.
Burning sensation in mouth and gum may be due to local cause like Vitamin B-complex deficiency particularly riboflavin and Vitamin B12. Hence Vitamin B-complex supplementation will help.
Minor hypothalamic ischemic stroke may cause numbness & tingling on the one side of my body( in your case it is on left side-hence hypothalamic lesion is likely to be on right side).

Numbness & tinglingis mostly remains unchanged after development.
Patients test different medications and eventually have to choose the regimen that best adapts to their lifestyle, the most common of which are opiates and anti-depressants. Newer pharmaceuticals include anti-convulsants and Kampo medicine.
