What Causes Burning Sensation In Right Leg And Hand Despite Taking Naproxen?

I am getting burning/shooting type pains in my right leg, really painful and had this problem for about two weeks now. Also, they come and go in my right hand, wrist and thumb, iv been taking Naproxen and codeine/paracetamol prescribed by my doctor but it doesn t really help much, do you think it s a nerve ending type of pain which i was previously diagnosed with once before ? Any ideas please would be much appreciated , thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain you describe seems to be due to nerve root being pressed or pinched; this in the leg is called sciatica pain and similar condition can happen with the nerves that run down the arm and hand as well.
Sometimes naproxen and other medications in its group can help but many times they do not help enough with nerve pain.

To help with the pain you can try to have some diazepam (low dose and not for longer than a week) to help relax the muscles around the nerve and in the back, this might help reduce the pain. Some patients might have improvement of nerve pain with Gabapentine.
Physiotherapy might help with nerve pain as well so seeing a physiotherapist might prove helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
