General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Burning is usually related to issues with the nerves that supply the area. This is called neuropathy and there are different possible causes. It can be temporary or permanent.

Some of the common causes are:

(1) Trauma eg arthritis or other changes to the spine- imaging of the back would help determine if this is the case

(2) Diabetes

(3) Autoimmune disease such as RA or lupus

(4) Liver or kidney disease

(5) Low vitamin b12 or folate

(6) Thyroid disease

(7) Infection

(8) Exposure to toxins

If the imaging does not show any changes then blood tests may be needed to determine if it is related to one of the other causes mentioned.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
