What Causes Burning Sensation In The Righ Leg After Walking?

I have a burning sensation after I walk for about 15 minutes only on my right foot . This sensation will immediately disappear as soon as I take my shoes off and rest my feet . I have seen several doctors and diagnosis has not been very clear . I was told that it is most likely associated with my back but could this be neuropathy. My Vitamin levels are fine ( B12 was boarder line low) and I am not diabetic. Also I have had this condition for a couple of years . it has disappeared for periods of time . I do like to walk everyday and not sure if that is aggravating the situation. Any feedback is appreciated

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The burning sensation can be due to neuropathy as you stated. Neuropathy is an abnormal function of the nerves.

If there are any issues with the blood supply to this area, this can also be an issue as well. This can be assessed by checking the pulses in the foot and also in the ankle.

Neuropathy has a number of different causes. An x-ray or other imaging of the spine would be needed to see if trauma to the nerves of the back is present. Trauma can be due to arthritis or any other bony changes.

Low folate, thyroid hormone problems, liver or kidney disease, exposure to toxins, infections, autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), abnormal B6 level, MS or other neurological conditions, multiple myeloma--- these are all possible causes of neuropathy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
