What Causes Burning Sensation In The Right Side Of The Abdomen After A Hysterectomy?

I recently had an abdominal hysterectomy on 5/26. I am recovering nicely but ever so often, especially when the pain killers ware off, I experience a severe burning sensation on the right side of my abdomen. My ovaries and fallopian tubes were removed but my cervix remained in place. Can you tell me if this burning sensation on the right side of my abdomen is normal and how long would it take before it stops?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of hysterectomy with removal of ovaries and Fallopian tubes, cervix was not removed, there is severe burning sensation on right side of abdomen after the effects of painkiller wear off. Wants to know whether this is normal and how long does it take before it stops.
This is surely not normal to have burning sensation in abdomen after hysterectomy.
Hence it is imperative to find the cause by consulting your Doctor who operated, take a second opinion of a General Surgeon.
Go for proper relevant investigations.
The possible causes can be as follows:
Nerve entrapment as you have burning sensation. This can be at any level from spine to abdominal wall.
Ultrasonography of abdomen followed by CT scan of abdomen may be helpful to confirm or rule out any internal problems.
Once the cause is found the treatment may be specific.
It may usually take few weeks for such a pain to settled.
It is also necessary to rule out Shingles that is Herpes Zoster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
