What Causes Burning Sensation In The Throat After Taking Nexium?

I take 40 mg of Nexium twice a day, and woke up with throat burning and the reflux causing me to spit up the burning fluid from it. I took my 2nd dose around 5pm, but took another around 9pm when I woke up. I am still having some burning, and not sure what else to do. My Thanksgiving meal and left-overs apparently didn t totally agree with my stomach. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Nexium (esomeprazole) is used to treat acidity and I don't think it is causing acid reflux. Acid reflux is caused due to gastroesophageal valve problems. I think you should continue with nexium. You should take nexium empty stomach in the morning before taking meal for best effect. Also take some antacid suspension like gelosil. It will help a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akash Kumar
