What Causes Burning Sensation On Tongue While Eating?

My mother is 79 years old. She has recently started to experience a burning sensation in her tongue when eating or drinking. The pain is so severe she stops eating and I fear that she may not be getting enough nutrition. After quizzing her, it seems to be related to foods containing vinegar. She has no cuts or sores in her mouth.
