What Causes Burning Sensation Upon Injecting Needle?

I gave blood today. Not the first time, but the first time it burned as soon as the needle was inserted. Only lasted maybe 2 minutes and the just hurt some. I asked afterward why the burning and she said that it was the Betadine. I don t buy this since Betadine doesn t sting. What could have happened?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. There is nothing to worry about burning sensation at the site of prick. Skin is cleaned with antiseptic to avoid any microbial entry into the body before drawing blood or injecting, antiseptics usually contain alcohol and other substance including betadine which causes no irritation on closed skin.
After cleaning site of prick is left for few seconds to be air dried and then the procedure is initiated taking all aspetic precautions. Sometimes when the site of prick irritate, burn and in some cases small lump also appear due to skin irritation by the use of antiseptic. The signs of skin irritation are normal responses of body to foreign substances, and subside in few minutes without any intervention. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
