What Causes Carpel Tunnel Syndrome While Suffering From Herniated Disc In Neck?
I have a herniated disc c-5 in my neck. I had mri etc. I went for nerve test and they discovered carpal tunnel in both wrists. they want to do car. tun. surgery instead neck surgery. I disagree. the orgin is my neck regarding my hand issues. what do you think
Hello and welcome to HCM, Herniated disc in neck and carpal tunnel syndrome both are associated with musculoskeletal system but their pathogenesis is not related. Both disease processes are separate and occurrence of both disorders is just co-incidental. The treatment of herniated disc is conservative initially with rest, pain killer and physiotherapy. If the disc does not replace to its original location, surgical intervention may be required. The carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of median nerve which runs in through a narrow tunnel in the wrist. Compression can due to physical pressure or diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis etc. Thus, the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome needs to be found out. The treatment of underlying cause will only relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
