What Causes Chest Discomfort On The Right Side?

I had a shunt put in to deal with normal pressure hydrocephlis (sp) three years ago. It achieved all that I wanted and I am very pleased. Recently I have been having some discomfort in the right hand side if my chest. Almost like I had a cracked rib. Sitting up or walking are not affected. I notice it at night when I am trying to go to sleep. I have reduced my weight from 225 to l98 and am working out 3 days a week and have been for more than two years. It doesn t bother me when I work out. I ll be 89 my next birth day and am thankful for that. I am just confused about what this might be. Thank you, John Orr

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, you need to have a chest X-ray to rule out any lung pathology like pneumothorax though it's likely muscular. Using OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be helpful. Muscle relaxants like orphenadrine or tizanidine can be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
