What Causes Chest Pain And Difficulty In Breathing After A Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hi there My partner had a full Hip replacement 8 days ago. She was rushed back into hospital with suspected clots in her lung and leg . However, after scans thus is clear. We were allowed back home tonight. What started it, and it s just continued. When she is sleeping, laying down... Chest pain, on her left side underneath her breast is cronic (Intermittant) and takes her breath away like stabbing.... when she can sit up, like at present, this eases BUT.. her breast is extremely sensitive and sore to touch in addition to the pain that she says is inside?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If scans are done and lung clots are ruled out at the cause of the chest pain and shortness of breath, very likely her symptoms are due to anxiety. This is likely the case as her symptoms happen at night when she laying down and not exercising.

She will need to take pain killers before bed and also try to avoid coffee, alcohol, smoking and energy drinks. Some psychotherapy may be helpful as well. In some cases, if symptoms are bothersome and last more than two weeks, treatment for anxiety is indicated (SSRI drugs).

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
