Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
When i was 15 years old I started having difficulty breathing. It s an on again off again kinda thing. I don t remember how often it came and left(weeks or months) but when it did come, it would happen everyday, sometimes a couple of times a day. When i was 17 i finally went to the doctor about it but they didn t run any tests and they told me that it was normal for my age and not to worry about it. Well here it is 6 years after it started and 4 years after i went to the doctor and i still have it. I would really like to know what is it and how it can be treated. I have to take really deep breaths to get enough air and it makes my lungs expand, which then makes my chest hurt like it doesn t have enough room for them to expand. Its a sharp pain until i exhale. Even taking deep breaths, sometimes i still feel like i can t get enough air. Any suggestions?
You need to have pulmonary function tests to look at the ability of the lungs to expand along with the volume of air they are accommodating. A chest examination to rule out any signs of broncho-spasm should be done.
Allergy Tests may be needed as well along with Chest X-ray or CT of chest if needed, but these are not symptoms which should be ignored as it can cause life threatening exacerbations of breathlessness. Hence, it should be diagnosed properly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
