My father in law has Alzheimer s and demintia and is complaining of chest pains and I have given him 3 nitrostat in 30 minutes. I don t know whether he is serious or not? He cries wolf a lot. Both shoulders are hurting as well. He continues to fall asleep and wake up complaining of pain. Hospital or no?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

I understand your frustration and but if he does have underlying heart disease, I would advise you to bring him to the emergency room to be sure. They would have an ECG done, and maybe a blood test for cardiac enzymes to tell if there's been damage to the heart tissue.

It could simply be acid reflux, or even muscle pain, but with heart disease, most of the time we err on the side of caution, because if we don't take action early, it might be too late to save the heart.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
