General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Chest tightness in a heavy smoker can be caused by several factors, including smoking-induced lung damage, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular diseases such as angina or heart attack. In some cases, chest tightness can also be a symptom of anxiety or panic disorder.
Since your test results came back normal, it's possible that the doctor prescribed Xanax for your anxiety symptoms. It's important to discuss your concerns about taking the medication with your doctor and find an approach that works for you. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
