What Causes Child To Talk About Committing Suicide?

My daughter is 7. Recently she started saying she wants to kill herself. I dont know if this is serious. I dont know if i need to call her pediatrician to get a referal to see a therapist. I have mental health problems and am worried that she will follow in the same footsteps. My wife thinks that she is just acting out and that we should punish her for being spoiled. What actions should I take?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. It is usually not common to talk about suicide or killing self in children. She is 7 and is saying that she wants of kill herself. This shouldn't be ignored and she should be shown to a psychiatrist for evaluation. Some times underlying anxiety, depression etc disorders can develop even in children and cause such symptoms. You also have history of mental disorders and this also increases the risk of mental conditions in her. Don't think about punishing her because by doing this you will prevent her in expressing her ideas and this may prove harmful. Both of you should sit with her and talk with her. Try to find out if anything is bothering her in school as well as at home.

Take her to a psychiatrist for evaluation. Drugs like Fluoxetine are approved for use in depression in children. Provide her warm loving support and she would improve from her symptoms. Visit a psychiatrist for prescription of these medicines.
