Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
After my lunch, I choked on an apple which left a sensation of acid at the rear of my tongue. Approximately 4 hours later, I choked again while drinking hot coffee. An hour later, while eating a meal of meat and vegetables, my salivary gland began swelling. Within 20 minutes the gland became painful as the pressure from the swelling increased. The swelling began to subside approximately one hour after the onset of the swelling. I took a 25 mg antihistamine. 30 minutes later, I ate a salty snack. The swelling began almost immediately.Could there be a blockage in my salivary gland or did i experience a reation to food?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Swelling of the salivary glands after eating is suggestive of inflammation of the salivary glands. Frequent choking can be due to some kind of obstruction in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. An imaging study is required to assess the upper GI tract. In case any obstruction is detected on the imaging study, appropriate action can be taken. Regurgitation of the gastric contents can be prevented by using a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). PPIs help to prevent the regurgitation of gastric contents back into the esophagus and throat. Swelling of salivary gland is infectious in nature and can be treated with antibiotic.
