Difficulty in swallowing is called as oropharyngeal dysphagia. In this condition, one cannot easily swallow food. The person may feel the difficulty in swallowing the food items. Oropharyngeal dysphagia may be due certain neurological conditions such as multiple
sclerosis, brain or
spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease,
stroke, Zenker's diverticulum, and cancer. Depends on the etiology, corrective measures needed.
Even fast eating habit may cause dysphagia in some individuals. Swallowing exercises help to overcome dysphagia.
Choking is a complication of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Slow eating and swallowing after deep chewing prevents dysphagia. Barium swallow and
endoscopy are the investigations opted for diagnosing the pathology. Visit the specialist, if the symptoms persists.
