What Causes Choking Sensation And Breathing Difficulty In Sleep?
Hello Dr. Siegel... have a concern with my husband waking up choking and not able to breathe while sleeping. More than a few times now he threw up in order to breathe and he appeared to look some chest discomfort, I saw redness in mucus and also tobacco chew I know he does not go to sleep with chew in his mouth. He has been chewing tobacco for over 14 years and he does not spit at all while having chew in his mouth. I am concern what is the bad effect not spitting and if he is having serious health issue now.
The not spitting doesn't have any significant negative effect. However judging from your description he might have sleep apnea, a condition which results from collapsing of the airways during sleep and breathing interruption.
It is a condition which if confirmed by tests (like polysomnography) should be addressed as apart from resulting in daytime fatigue and sleepiness it is a risk factor for heart disease.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Olsi Taka, Neurologist
