Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Choking Upon Eating And Constant Phlegm In Throat?
My husband has developed big problems with his esophagus/sphincter. The sphincter was first lazered and has been stretched three times - he has had very little relief. Upon eating (or trying to eat) a meal he starts to choke. His throat and mouth suddenly fills with phlegm - like it suddenly bursts up and out of his mouth. He is really suffering from all this, and the doctors say there is nothing more that can be done. Do you agree? His weight went from 224 lbs. down to 173.lbs. Can you offer any suggestions? It s scary when he choke. It seems he doesn t lose much food -- just lots of phlegm. We would certainly appreciate your help/suggestions. Thanks for your consideration.
He is suffering from gastric reflux due to the incompetence of the low esophageal sphincter. Surgery is the main treatment for that problem. Also, having smaller quantities of food but frequently may help improve the symptoms. He should also try to avoid a lot of liquids.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Jolanda Nikolla, Pulmonologist
