Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
On a few occasions I've gotten choked and couldn't breathe because I was starting to swallow food or drink and an air bubble came up my throat at the same time. I couldn't get the food down or breathe. I was panicke and felt like I was going to pass out. Last time it happened at work during a meeting and I made a big, frightening scene. I thought I was seriously going to die. I couldn't get the air bubble out of my throat. I was choking. What causes this and what should I do if it happens again?
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of choking while eating or drinking which could be due to granular pharyngitis, formation of lump, gastroesophageal reflux disease and contraction of muscle sphincters.
Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day. You should avoid heavy and spicy food specially at night and eat small and frequent meals. You should do betadine gargles as well. You should take it little seriously and consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like blood test , throat swab test , endoscopy and CT scan. From diagnostic studies exact diagnosis can be made out. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course, anti inflammatory medications or refer you to gastroenterologist.
Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
