What Causes Cholesterol And Triglyceride Level Changes?

My husband's lab work suggests that his cholestrol and triglyceride levels have changed dramatically in a little over a year. Our eating habits and excersize routine haven't changed much. Is it normal to change from 172 total /48 HDL and 88 Tri to 245 total /39 HDL and 167 Tri?

Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Welcome to HCM,

I understand your concerns. I am assuming these labs were done at the same lab? And, yes, it is possible for lipids to change to the extent they have in the time period suggested.

Your doctor can run further tests but it would be wise to start a low saturated fat, high soluble fiber (oats, fresh fruit-limited, lentils), low fructose, no added sugar diet, and I am speaking in general terms. When the triglycerides increase research shows that fructose, High fructose corn syrup play a significant role in the elevation of the triglycerides. Yours are 167 and we would like to see them below 150. So cut down on juices.

Have any of your medications changed at all? I suggest you take a look at the Mediterranean Meal Plan for overall guidance and recheck profile when doctor advises.

Making an appointment with a Dietitian for an individualized diet and lifestyle program adjustment seems to be in order. At some point your doctor may suggest a statin drug.

Please contact us again if we can be of further assistance. Regards, Kathy J. Shattler, MS,RDN
