What Causes Chronic Vertigo And Nausea?

Sir, I am having mild virtigo and nausea from last 4 months. This started with me before 4 years when I was diagonised with ulcerative colotis. After re scopy before 1 year found normal colon. But still virtigo and nausea is present .Kindly suggest what would be the cause. My family physician refered me to a psycatrist & then for a year I was on PAROXETINE which my psycatrist tapered and now from last 3.5 months I am not taking any medicine.I do not think it would be psycological. Please guide do i need to have any further investigation / tests. Dhiraj D Rathi 0000

Hi,

Noted your history of ulcerative colitis that got better but the vertigo and nausea continued for which your Family Doctor advised for Psychiatrist.
Nausea with vertigo has 3 important causes:
- Any problem with the ears like vestibulitis, fluid imbalance in the semicircular canals that have balancing function.
- Cerebellar that is part of brain at the back of skull problems.
- Cervical sponditlitis, reduced blood supply through the vertebral arteries.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Consult a Senior ENT Surgeon to start with for proper clinical evaluation.
- Get CT and MRI as combo-study of mastoids and brain.
- All studies may lead to the cause.
- If above studies are normal then MRI with angiography of cervical spine and vertebral arteries.
- Second opinion of a Neurologist.
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and thus allow a specific treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
