What Causes Chronic Constipation After Giving Loperamide For Diarrhea?

We gave our 12 year old granddaughter loperamide 1 tablet in Mexici as she had diareah and was vomiting. We had to leave and go back to ca. After a while she got bad cramps and we finally had to get her to a hospital in Mexico. She was under observation and afte a.whole night at a hospital in San diego the doctors relieved her, nothing was wrong with her. But her stool was hard. Now her father is accusing us for giving her something that stopped her from getting the stool out to get rid of the bacterial. What can we do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Loperamide is not a recommended drug especially for kids. As of now you can give laxatives like lactulose and ask him to take more fiber rich foods. Nothing much to worry and he will improve in couple of days. If symptoms persist, it is better to consult a physician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
