What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Breathing Difficulty?

Hello. I have had a deep cough since Nov.2016.I am having a very difficult time breathing! I feel like I gasp for air. I have seen a doctor who prescribed antibiotics and steroids. My cough has not stopped and I had a very serious episode with gasping for air and continual coughing for almost an hour. My x-rays came back clear. I was also put on Claritin D, Flonase and Benedryl at night. My symptoms have not stopped. What can this be caused by?!

Hello,
Thanks for trusting healthcaremagic.com
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

As per your description it seems that you are having chronic cough for few months. It needs to be evaluated to find out the exact cause of your symptoms.
I suggest you to consult a good pulmonolgist and get the following things done:-
1.Start a short course of antibiotics other than the one you had earlier, preferably levofloxacin.
2.Take a repeat X-ray to look for any lesions or features of COPD( Chronic obstructive airway disease)
3.A spirometry to assess the severity of your disease.
4.Sputum examination to rule out tuberculosis.
Other investigations may be needed depending on the initial evaluation, which might include a CT scan or a bronchoscopy.
As of now you can do the following:-
1.Quit smoking.
2.Avoid cold and dust.
3.You can do nebulization from your nearby nursing home.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
Dr.Shinas
