Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 23 years old.. female and I have been coughing for almost two weeks. (productive cough). A while ago, I cough and spit phlegm with bright red blood and also got a spit which is like a clot of phlegm but is not red in color.. what could it be? My lungs doesn't hurt and I can breath easily.
Hello. A cough lasting for more than two weeks must not be ignored. There are many causes of blood in the phlegm such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, or even irritation of the throat from violent coughing. Sometimes bleeding from outside lungs like nose, stomach etc can also be coughed up. However its important to do a thorough workup. Kindly visit your doctor, as details about the cough, amount of blood etc are required, in addition to a chest examination, blood test, sputum test and a radio-logical study like chest xray/CT. Hope this helps. Take care.
