What Causes Chronic Cough While Suffering From GERD?

Hello, I am a 60yr old female with GERD, I am taking Protonix x 3 yrs. , my indigestion is under control. Problem is a chronic cough for many years. Mostly triggered by thick, clear mucous/saliva on back of tongue. Have seen an ENT, thought allergies. Nasal spray and antihistamines are no help. Thinking maybe GI related??? Help, cough is affecting all aspects of my life.... (my GI Doctor is no longer on my plan) Thank you

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Apart from GERD and allergy, there are many other possible medical conditions that may give you chronic cough. Some of these causes may include:
-Asthma
-Blood pressure drugs like ACE inhibitors
-Chronic bronchitis
-Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
-Bronchiectasis
-Lung cancer
-Sarcoidosis.....
I will suggest you see a lung specialist(Pneumologist) since your GI Doctor and ENT might not have eliminated these causes yet.The Pneumologist will have to evaluate your respiratory functions with test like spirometry/peak flow test. You may also need a chest X ray, CT scan and sputum exam.
In the meantime, i will suggest you try the following:
*Continue with Protonix for your GERD related problem
*Take a bronchodilator like seretide
*An anti-histamine like premalan
*A steroid nasal spray
*Take enough water
*Exercise regularly
*Eat healthy foods
*Avoid smoke and air pollution
Your Lung specialist may plan more objective treatment options after investigation
Hope this will help
Best regards
