What Causes Chronic Cough?

Does all coughs means you got a cold? I have a cough that appears to come from my stomach area. It s like three coughs than relax. On day one my three coughs would happen every 5 to 10 mins and by the evening it dropped to every two mins. As of the past two days I could go 15, 20, 30 or 40 mins before I cough again. Providing I m sitting still. If I m moving around or talking it s more frequent.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query you have symptoms of chronic cough which is due to acid reflex due to excessive acid production and could be due to infection of respiratory tract. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day. Avoid use of sharp and spicy food substances. You should do light walk after every meal. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. Your symptoms will resolve in 1 week. If symptoms keeps on persisting you should consult ENT specialist and take proper treatment. You should get X-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (Amoxicillin or Penicillin) at least for 5 days along with decongestant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I can understand your concern. As per your history it may be due to an allergy. Other causes for chronic cough are repeated exposure to infection, decreased immunity and dehydration. You can use syrup Dextromethorphan. Kindly consult with your physician for detailed examination. You may require chest x ray and patch test after consultation.

Take care.
