What Causes Chronic Diarrhea After A Hip Surgery?

My 95 yr. old mom just had hip surgery and while in the hospital was having 4 to 5 bowl movements that theodor was so bad we opened windows and left the room. What caused this? Was t her anti biotic? She was on Cipro for UTI and another antibiotic for her surgery

Noted your concern.

Yes there is high possibility of antibiotic induced diarrhea.

Due to antibiotics bacteria helping for digestion may also get killed.
Also there may be possibility of growth of bacteria which are resistant to prescribed antibiotics like clostrodial infection (pseudo membranous colitis).

In such a case there is a need to maintain good hydration and use of prebiotic may help.
In resistant cases where pseudo membranous colitis is suspected use of metronidazole or vancomycin may be suggested.
