What Causes Chronic Diarrhea After Eating?

I have had diarrhea for over 40 years. I had an 18 month remission, and then it came back. I have recently had every test you can imagine and nothing seems to be wrong. If I don t eat the diarrhea is delayed, but immediately after eating, I sometimes can t even make it to the bathroom. Lately, I have noticed what appears to be mucus in the bowel movement. I have never had pain just immediate passage of movement, usually very loose and sometimes just watery. No weight loss, and I am in good health, and I excersize on a treadmill every day. Any ideas? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

Has anyone ever considered food allergies? The reason I ask is because you have had it for so many years and still you seem fairly well. The problem with food allergies is that sometimes the reaction can be a little delayed, and is difficult to match with the pattern of intake.

I am assuming that you did have a colonoscopy done, since they have tested you so thoroughly. Did they do a biopsy of the bowel lining at the time? That can sometimes be useful to tell if you have Coeliac's disease. If you havent, I highly suggest a colonoscopy, because it will be useful to look at the lining of the bowels, and even cancers, since you have some new mucus appearing. Another option is to go see an allergist for tests to see if you are allergic to some common triggers, and go from there.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
