What Causes Chronic Diarrhea While On Ranitidine?

I ve been on Ranitidine for 3 months & have developed chronic diarrhea. Also, my alkaline phosphatase has spiked. My research suggests these are not uncommon side effecte of the drug. I had been taking PPIs for years prior to switching to Ranitidine but they caused severe depletion of my magnesium levels to the point that I had to be hospitalized & infused with same. Any suggestions as to what I might try next?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Diarrhoea is a common cause of using Ranitidine. In this case, I recommend stopping the medication.

I also recommend using an over the counter option like Imodium three tablets a day. I suggest to drink liquids and use a plain diet with bananas, toast, and rice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
