What Causes Chronic Diarrhea With Severe Abdominal Cramps?
I have suffered from chronic diarrhea and some minor cramping in the lower abdomen for several months. my doctors thought it was gall bladder but x-rays and a hida-scan seems to have ruled that out. I was on vacation in Florida and North Carolina during May and June, eating a good deal of fish and shrimp. played in the waters on both coasts of florida. any thoughts?
First of all, it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, infective causes should be ruled out with stool analysis and microscopy as well as cultures. Other causes like malabsorption syndromes may also need to be ruled out.
Coeliac serology and CT abdomen may be needed. If chronic diarrhoea persists, colonoscopy or capsule endoscopy may be an option which is less invasive.
Meanwhile, oral rehydration salts and water intake should be ensured to rule out any electrolytes loss. Thyroid profile and sugar levels may need to be reviewed. Anti Motility agents like loperamide may be used to decrease stool frequency. Adsorbents like ispaghol husk may be helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
