What Causes Chronic Diarrhea?

Yesterday out of the blue, I started having diarrhea, it progressed all night, I did not eat anything unusual, but it became worse, I would drink some water and within 5 minutes back to the bathroom. I am not achy or sore, I did get really hot and then later cold but that s it. This is the second time this has happened in about 4-6 weeks. I don t understand what is wrong. It causes me to miss work and darn uncomfortable. I am 65 years old, and basically healthy...suggestions?

Hi

I had gone through all your symptomatic history. I can understand your discomfort. Diarrhea is a very common condition which is caused by many factors. The most common cause is bacterial infection of bowel (gastroenteritis). This is not a type of chronic diarrhea. It is caused by intake of infected food.
In my opinion your diarrhoea is not a chronic case. 2nd time in 4-5 weeks is not considered as chronic. You can confirm it by blood test and stool tests. As you had asked causes of chronic diarrhea, I am mentioning here:
1. Pancreatic disorders (chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic enzyme deficiencies, cystic fibrosis)
2. Intestinal disorders (Crohn's Disease, irritable bowel syndrome)
3. Medications (repeated use of some antibiotics, laxative)

Follow the below things for quick relief of your diarrhea
1. Drink more pure water.
2. Take ORS solution.
3. Eat light meal
4. Coming to medicine part, take probiotics and an antibiotic

Hope you can get some benefit from my information and act in right way accordingly.
Don't worry, Wish you a speedy recovery.

Take Care
