What Causes Chronic Dizziness And Hair Loss In An Elderly Person?

I am 81, female, married. I seem to be constantly dizzy-headed, confused, can t remember anything, can t sleep, losing my hair, hallucinating. That s all I can remember right now. About 4 yrs ago I had been going to the same doctor for about 30 yrs and he wasn t paying attention to what I told him. I had lost weight by staying at the hospital with my head injured son while he was in critical condition for 6 wks. My doctor put me in the hospital with pneumonia; nurse brought me a pill that I wasn t familiar with & told me if I didn t take it she would put down refused so I took it and after that I started having severe hallucinations (very frightening). As far as I am concerned THAT started my problems but my doctor says no to a sleep study, no to a referral to a Neurologist, NO to everything else. I think some of my medication are too strong for me - I weight 120, 5 3 . Taking Venlafaxine XR 75MG, Valsartan Tab 160MG, Metoprolol Succ Tab 50MG ER, Atorvastatin 40MG. I am still hallucinating but they are mild - not like when I was in the hosp and seeing my granddaughter and son-in-law peeling the ceiling back and talking to me, raining in my room but not on my bed & being in a large motor home with other people. Any ideas about what I should do or what I have??

Hello,

You are having symptoms of forgetfulness like confusion or problems with thinking and reasoning. No worries, take omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin-E (Evion 400), once daily for 20 days. Vitamins deficiency causes hair loss, take nutritious home made food or multivitamin supplements. You have not mentioned anywhere but it seems you are hypertensive with high lipid profile as you are taking Atorvastatin, metoprolol succ, Valsartan.

Side effects of certain medications may cause hallucinations so you are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP / Cardiologist. Get repeat lipid profile done so that the medicines can be monitored properly & you do not get hallucinations. Stay well hydrated, take food rich in iron, protein, calcium. Take adequate sleep. Avoid addictions if any. Sometimes, dizziness is caused by earwax or vertigo. Get clinically examined by an ENT to detect any ear issues causing dizziness. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
