What Causes Chronic Ear Pain?

I have a chronic (comes and goes) deep inside my ear. My family doctor has checked for infection but found none. Today I went bowling and my ear was fine but whenever I begin to move around and bowl, my ear deep inside started to hurt, a stabbing pain. It is gone now but I know it will return.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

There is a connecting tract (known as Eustachian tube) between the nasopharynx & middle ear through which infection can spread to ear.
Also obstruction to this Eustachian tube, secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cold & congestion, can lead to ear pain/ blockage by causing un-equalisation of pressure between the nasopharynx & middle ear.

Management includes:
1. Antihistamine preparations like Allegra.
2. Decongestant nasal drops.
3. Antibiotics based on culture & sensitivity reports.
4. Warm salt water gargle and Steam inhalation.
5. Chewing gum and practice of Valsalva maneuver is also helpful is equalizing the pressure.
6. Maintenance of adequate hydration & nutrition status of the body.
7. Protection from cold, dust & other allergens.

Wish you good health & a speedy recovery.
Take care.
