Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My elderly mother is allergic to sulfa. She needs diuretics due to CHF, edema, etc... She was prescribed spironolactone but it has sulfa and she has developed severe itching! Can you recommend a water pill option that does not have sulfa? The doctors have offered no solutions and insists that she has to use the spironolactone but we feel there must be something else that she can use that does not have sulfa. Ideas?
I'm sorry to correct you and apologize if this comes off as rude, but spironolactone does not have any sulfa in it, and is safe to use in patients with sulfa allergies. She must be allergic to something else she is taking or being exposed to. You can try triamterene, which is another diuretic that doesn't have sulfa.
I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
