What Causes Chronic Itching On The Scalp And Back?

I am suffering from severe itching on my scalp and on my back. In addition I have noticed a sudden increase in hair thinning and dry brittle nails. I do take vitamins and drink plenty of water and exercise. My dermatologist has prescribed ketoconazole shampoo and told me to use Rogaine for the thinning hair, but I haven’t noticed an improvement. The itching is moving to other parts of my body.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Ketoconazole treats fungal infections. Likely you physician thought you had some type of dermatophytosis. Your symptoms may also represent a psoriatic disease process. I would speak with you physician about the topical anti-fungals not working and asked to be worked up of psoriasis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
