Your symptoms suggest any one of the following conditions:
1) Peptic ulcer disease
2) Gastroesophageal reflux(GERD)
3) Esophagitis
4) Esophageal spasm
5) Hiatus hernia
To those who come to my clinic with peptic ulcer disease, bi recommend the following:
1) Lab tests for H. Pylori organism are done by breath testing
2) Endoscopy if necessary
3) Treatment includes the following:
a) Antibiotics to kill H. Pylori like Amoxicillin,
Clarithromycin, Metronidazole
b) H2 receptor antagonists like Famotidine, Nizatidine to be taken twice daily before food
c) Proton pump inhibitors block
gastric acid production. They are
esomeprazole, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole
d) Antacids to neutralize the gastric acid
e) Medication that protects the lining of stomach like sucralfate.
4) Head elevation while sleeping
5) Upright posture for at least 40min after food intake.
6) Conditions causing raised intraabdominal pressure like
chronic cough are to be treated
7) Avoid alcohol
8) Avoid NSAIDs
9) Manage stress
Hypothyroidism may exacerbate GERD. As you have been on pill, nothing to worry about this. Please discuss the above mentioned treatment options with your physician and get a prescription for medicines.
