What Causes Chronic Numbness And Pain In The Finger?

My little finger of my left hand started going to sleep about a month ago..It now feels like it is going numb all the time and is very painful, the nail is like paper and seems to be falling off. It isnt swollen but seems red, especially at the tip to the first joint. Now the ring finger next to it seems to be starting to get numb too. What could cause this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Various conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, or rheumatoid arthritis, can cause chronic numbness and pain in the fingers. An injury can also cause it to the hand or wrist. See a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis, as some of these conditions may require specific treatment.

They may also refer to a specialist in the hand and upper extremities. In the meantime, try to avoid activities that may exacerbate the symptoms and use ice to reduce inflammation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
