I need dental work done and will be treated with Novocaine/local anesthetic. I've had some kidney function blood tests that showed out of normal levels so will be having further testing. I also have chronic urinary retention. I'm female and am not self-catherizing yet as urologist is running tests. I can urinate but have post residuals of 130-200 cc's at all times. Do I need to be concerned about have local anesthetic as I know it is filtered through kidneys and released out of the bladder?
There are many reasons for chronic retention of urine as chronic infection, diverticula of bladder, urethral stricture, bladder hypertonia, problems with internal urethral meatus, central nervous system related issues, spinal cord lesions, and others. So far as local anesthesia elimination is concerned, discuss with the dentist to put internal catheter for desired period of time simply so there will be no issue.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
