What Causes Clear Discharge From Ear?

My son had grommets inserted in January of this year. up until now I have had no worries upart from the grade 4 tonsilitis he had beginning of july but EAT specialist was happy with his ears then. lately I have noticed him getting louder when he is talking. About 4 days ago I noticed he had dry flacky wax in his ear. I cleaned it with a damp warm flannel and thought nothing of it as he was not complaining of any pain. The last 2 days tonight being the worst however he has had this clear discharge pooling out of his left ear. I will be taking him to the doctors tomorrow but I am a little worried and want to know what to expect. Weird thing is that he said he is hearing better out of the discharging ear then he is the other??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Based on your description, he has an infection in the ear which can be associated with discharge and hearing loss (usually temporary).

His doctor would likely prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection, these may be topical drops to the ear.

I hope this helps
