What Causes Clear Looking Bump Under Tongue And Lower Lip?

My daughter, who is 17, developed a small clear looking bump under her tongue, it hung almost like a skin tag. All of a sudden tonight she noticed a fairly good sized lump on her lower lip that kind of moves and has a bluish tint. After checking her lip I asked to look under her tongue and it appears that the bump that looked like a tag is flatter and may have hardened. I was thinking that the two could be the same thing but not sure if a gland issue would effect the tongue and lip. Also, what type of doctor do you see for this? A dentist? An ENT? Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

As per your complain it seems that the bump under the tongue can be a traumatic ulcer, an inflamed minor salivary gland or can be a small mucocele that is a mucous cyst formed due to rupture in duct of minor salivary gland. All the conditions are harmless and self resoluting. On the other hand a fairly good sized lump over the inner lip with a bluish tint is most probably a Mucocele as bluish tinted painless lump on inner lip is the most common presentation of mucocele.

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician or a Dentist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation is sufficient for diagnosis. Many a times just doing concentrated salt water rinses 3 to 4 times a day for about a week can resolve the mucocele. If there is no resolution then surgical removal of the mucocele can be done.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
