Hi, I am mother of a child with partial cleft lip and full cleft palate. Baby was diagnosed with cleft in the 26th week scan until then for all the previous scans, including the anomaly scans, his face was not clearly visible. Not that we could do anything at any given point of time, but I would like to know what would be the reasons that could have caused this cleft? Neither me or my husband have any history of cleft in our previous generations, and on doing general blood tests before planning to conceive, there were no complications addressed by the doctor. However, during my pregnancy, I came across situations where I was asked to take the penicillin injection to rule out any infections, which later on I got to know were pointing to false-positive Syphilis. I have never had any intercourse prior to being married, and after marriage have had sexual contact with only one person, my husband. It was quite surprising for me to come across a vague info that this passive syphilis infection could be one of the causes of cleft lip/palate. I wanted to know if this info is true or false? I have mentioned details of the result I was receiving in each of my syphilis tests. Serology : Syphilis Qualitative Nonreactive 1.00 Reactive = 1.00 Result : Reactive(5.26)S/CO Sample was tested in duplicate and is consistently reactive. False positive results can occur in this assay. Recommend clinical correlation and confirmation if clinically warranted with Syphilis confirmatory test.
