What Causes Cold And Cough Along With Body Ache?

I developed what I thought was a cold 5 days ago. It started with body aches and fatigue. I have now developed a cough, but not nagging yet. When I cough hard and cough up some mucus, my entire chest cavity - front and back - hurts like it s being pricked all over, inside and out. Is this more than a cold/cough?

Hello and thank you for using HCM for your health questions!

I think that you just have had an episode of flu (influenza). Sometimes people call it "common cold". What makes me think about flu is that this season, flu is characterized by these symptoms and signs: prolonged cough, chest pain, general fatigue, muscle pain, loss of appetite, sub febrile fever, etc. In other words, this season flu is not severe or does not bring acute symptoms, but it lasts longer. Flu vaccine is of little help this time, as well, even thought it helps to alleviate somehow the infection.
Please observe your body temperature: if it is too high (above 38.5-39 Celsius degree) and your respiratory symptoms deteriorate, than you should consider taking some form of medication (probably antibiotics) in order to prevent any other bacterial infection, but this should be done in consultation with your family doctor.
Meanwhile, please consume a lot of vitamin C - 10 tablets (100 mg tablets) a day as it improves the body immune system. Vitamin C will not harm you and the body excretes it easily so it doesn't pile up in the body. To combat pain you could consider paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets (2-3 tablets a day) in case you have no counter indications for using them.
I hope my answer has helped you and I wish you good luck!
