What Causes Cold Sensation In The Hands?

Hello. I live in a rural town that has been gripped in the cold snap (central Ontario, Canada). I shovelled snow and also have to carry the garbage down to the roadside, and in this cold, my hands get very cold; my fingertips now have no feeling. I can t even button my shirt because I cannot feel the buttons! I assume it s mild frost bite; will the feeling come back?

Hello i can understand your anxiety regarding your condition. I had seen some patients with similar complaints.
Frost bite is condition in which the blood vessels which are at periphery (more exposed) will get constricted when exposed to extreme cold for long time. It is a protective mechanism and if you remove cold conditions the vessels become normal. Problem arises when cold exposure is prolonged. As you said, you belong to category of long expose to cold.

The effected area may loose sensation (numbness). In severe cases bluish discoloration may occur. To know the severity, you can go for a MRI scan.

In my opinion you were effected with a mild form. So take care of the following things:

1. avoid risk factors if any (drinking alcohol, smoking)
2. wear proper clothes,
3. take plenty of water and nutrition,
4. avoid long exposure to cold climates,
5. try to make yourself warm
6. Rubbing of hands and feet is a very traditional way
7. ibuprofen can be taken if there is severe pain

If you follow these things, you will recover soon as your were effected with a mild type. Hoping for your speedy recovery.
