What Causes Coloration In The Ankles And Legs At Old Age?

my 92 year old motherhas large reddish blue areas coming up on her ankles and lower legs, which would not be too much of a concern, because of circulation and also because she bruises very easily. One of those bruised areas is accompanied by a large knot, about the size of a half dollar. I would think she had hit her leg, but she says it doesn t hurt, and doesn t remember hitting it. Could this be a blood clot? She has arthritis and Parkinson s disease.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In my view, it is a thrombus or blood clot, and it is necessary for her to get examined by a GP as the clot may dislodge from that area, and can cause serious complications. In addition, she might need an x-ray to rule out any fracture, and a few other blood work up to make the diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
