What Causes Compulsive Skin Picking After Domestic Abuse?

I have been victim of horrific domestic violence in every way since 2006. I began picking at my skin. I finally found out it is foliculitis BUT it s hundreds of it everywhere especially on my face. The problem is MUCH worse when my ex husband continues to use broken courts, Dcf /CPS false accusations and harass me. I know I have enough evidence to put him behind bars for SEVERAL years BUT I am not only afraid for my life but afraid of impact on my younger son. Idk what to do but my once beautiful skin is now completely filled with scars .. I even know I have picked in sleep/itched. I have wanted Laser for so long because I m too embarrassed to be in pics and even a bit agoraphobic. It gets much worse when the abuse cycles up every six months from ex. What can I do. I e been doing my own TCA peels but it s not truly taking these deep scars. At least I finally know I m not crazy ( as abusers beat your mind down to believe ) but I haven t worked since February after 24 years at same job. I ve run out of every ounce of savings, retirement , stocks etc. I am a single mom of two EXCELLENT, well mannered and respectful boys. I guess his substance abuse which caused him to abandon them for years was the best for them in long run. Unfortunately he did not abandon abusing me in any way. I want to live again in public. It s been 6-7 years and I m tired of hiding. Can stress make this disease worse ?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The chronic skin blistering is considered due to immune phenomenon destructing the various layers of epidermis or desmosome and hemi desmosomes of the skin. Stress can flare the issue in many of the cases, but ideal approach is to do a skin biopsy to find out the reason and fact file of the pathology insult in your case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
